Why Custom Cakes Cost More and Are Worth the Price
Often, when people see the price of custom cakes, they are surprised at how expensive they can be. As a cake maker, I often hear people say they can get the same cake from a grocery store for cheaper. I’m not here to discourage you from store-bought cakes. In fact, I had many store-bought cakes in my childhood—Costco cakes are my favorite! However, I want to educate you so that the next time you inquire with a local small bakery, you’ll be more aware of why their cakes are more expensive than the typical grocery store cakes.
1. Fresh Cakes vs. Frozen Cakes
Many bakeries bake their cakes from scratch and use minimal freezing and refrigeration. Grocery stores, on the other hand, typically produce their cakes in one of two ways: they are either baked elsewhere, frozen for transportation, and stored frozen until needed, or they are baked in-store using a mix to allow for quick mass production.
2. Variety of Flavors
Grocery stores often have a limited number of flavors and may not allow for customized or specialty flavors. This may work well for a large kids' party where everyone likely wants vanilla. However, for special occasions or for those who enjoy unique flavor combinations, small bakeries are the way to go. Small bakeries often offer custom flavors or have their own set of unique flavors.
3. Custom Designs
Grocery stores typically offer a variety of simple designs for your celebration, such as flowers, fruit, or piped balloons. If you are looking for an amazing cake that looks more like art or fits a specific theme, a bakery that specializes in custom cakes is the way to go. These often smaller bakeries will work with you to create a cake that will wow your guests and taste amazing.
4. Quality Ingredients
Small local bakeries often pride themselves on the quality of their ingredients and processes. Ingredients may be organic or locally sourced, and they may engage in small-batch baking versus mass-produced baking using generic ingredients.
Next time you consider ordering a cake, remember these points and know that the price reflects the quality, customization, and care that go into making a custom cake. There’s nothing wrong if a custom cake is not in your budget or if you find the grocery store to be a convenient option. It also doesn’t mean the grocery store has low-quality cakes. Many grocery stores, like Whole Foods and Sprouts, do some on-site baking that helps raise the quality of their product. Instead, consider what your needs are for your next event and search out places that can serve you based on those needs. Ultimately, choosing the right cake is about finding the perfect balance between your vision and your budget.
